Swing Away

Twentiesh gal living and working in the lovely Charleston, South Carolina with a new husband and an imaginary dog. By day: marketing+social media geek. Otherwise, I'm sous vide cooking, history loving, museum trekking, margarita making gal, with a side obsession of counting down the days to the Hobbit films.

My name is Claire. Taking a swing here at all things thrown my way.

Spent the last day of a holiday weekend with a very dear friend, who brunched with me over mimosas, eggs, fried alligator, and shrimp and grits. I love living in Charleston (and of course this food is to die for), but not having her here on a regular basis is painful every time she visits. Here’s to hoping the new year brings her back home, and that she makes it home safe tonight.

The Home Diggity Lowdown.

The move fell through. The couple who live there now were buying a short sale, and for one reason or another the bank didn’t approve the numbers. So, they’re staying, we’re staying, and all we can talk about now is buying a house, so perhaps this will all be to our benefit in the long run.

Still, it’s odd to think that we’ll be real married grown-ups in a little house somewhere. It’s so permanent, but that doesn’t worry me so much if I have a serious falling-in-love moment with a home. Owning all four walls, the backyard, a patio, the grass in the front and the dirt-lined driveway (at least, the temporary case if we somehow ended up getting the little number we drove by this evening) - it’s all so appealing and exciting.

For now, our little Queen rental is a sweet place to be. I’ll try to keep my complaining in check since it will be fall soon, and the windows and screen doors will be open to the sweet, warm breeze of a Charleston autumn. Then, I’m sure I’ll just fall in love with this little house all over again until next summer comes. We’ll move on when we’re really ready.

100 days

…until the wedding. It is pretty insane and certainly puts my mind on edge a little bit.

We looked at a potential new home tonight. It is up in the Wagener Terrace area of Charleston, and is a few blocks from a park as well as other intriguing hotspots. Aside from being newly remodeled, it has a washer, dryer, stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, plus other bonuses like a backyard and the potential for a little dog. I love that we would be able to still be remotely close to downtown, and still within range of the fancy, unique areas I so love.

The only thing slightly off-putting is that we’re going to be paying a bit more for it each month compared to our current digs. We also will lose the French Quarter ambiance of our little home now for a bit more of a rougher neck of town, but an area that certainly has quite a lot of character. Still, losing the tourists for a quiet backyard is not something I mind sacrificing; I find myself needing to hit them either over the head or with my car on a daily basis. Does the fact that this is a real road not apply to you? No, you cannot cross whenever you feel like, and yes I will glare at you so don’t wave your arms at me. The extra money each month is what I see going to the modern amenities; washer, dryer AND dishwasher? Maybe I’ll actually feel like a grown-up in my kitchen instead of still a college student.

So we’ll sleep on it tonight and see where we are in the morning. I have a feeling I am probably still going to want it, as will Jamey. Here’s to positive vibes.

It’s back, It’s back!  After a 3-month hiatus, Give & Take returns to their regularly scheduled programming tonight in Minneapolis.
Still not sure how this thing works? Allow me to explain:
You show up at the Intermedia Arts building at 6:30 and look for a nice lady sitting behind a table with nametags like the one above scattered all over it.  From there, you grab a Sharpie and you ask yourself these two questions: “What do you know?” and “What do you want to know?”, keeping in mind that you might be asked to elaborate on what you know, so for example, don’t write down that you know German if, hypothetically, you took three years of the language in middle school and can only memorize a phrase that tells people you prefer to travel by street car. You know, for example.
Tonight my nametag will read:
“I know how to make a killer Bloody Mary” and “I want to know how to hang drywall.”
Topics for tonight are scheduled include:
Janelle Nivens and Emily Lloyd on Neighborhood Art Projects (Minneapolis Neighborhood Project and 6 Words Twin Cities)
Maggie Ryan Sanford on “Why Dolphins are Badass”
Peter Schilling on the Art of Heckling
But maybe you hate dolphins and you’re still traumatized by the heckling you endured at a Junior High track meet? Fear not, the topics change every month, so there’s something for everyone.  Here’s a quick list of some past presentations/presentors:
-  Paul Merrill on Minnesota history-  Mike Phillips on charcuterie: the art of curing meat-  Aaron Landry on pizza-  MPLS.TV on starting a local media empire-  Art Allen on beards-  Kristin Shardlow and Shanai Matteson on growing up in small town Minnesota-  Sara Blair on how to meet new people in the Twin Cities-  Dr. Scott Fahrenkrug on cloning pigs-  Steph Pituc on Filipino cooking-  Erin Schumacher on experiential creative writing-  Conner McCall on street food culture in Minneapolis-  Andy McInnis on screen printing-  Becky Lang on how the Internet is changing the English language-  Jay Gabler on how to make a perfect mix CD-  Jake Nyberg on mullets-  Ed Kohler on freeing yourself from the dual scourge of phonebooks & junk mail-  Erica Edwardson & Stephanie Pituc on becoming a Twin Cities karaoke idol

This is awesome, and I want someone to help me organize a Charleston version.
